3 Sustainable Practices At Ecolodge Bukit Lawang

Since the day we opened our doors, it has always been our mission to be sensitive to our environment, taking every improvement in consideration before implementing them.

Here are 3 sustainable practices that we follow at Ecolodge:

  1. Ecofriendly Restaurant

Intricately designed in a boat’s form using mainly bamboo which we grow from our ecofarm, Kapal Bambu, a local name, is an ecofriendly restaurant and bar right at the foot of the jungle. We take pride in sourcing 90% of our ingredients locally in support of the community’s livelihood and organically from our very own farm where we grow different varieties of fruits and vegetables that are mostly consumed at the restaurant.

All the food that we serve are free from monosodium glutamate (MSG) or any flavour additives to promote proper nutrition and encourage the usage of aromatic spices that take us back to our ancestors.

This 2-storey restaurant also hosts programmes to discuss conservation efforts within the Leuser ecosystem and regularly invites delegates from all over the globe mainly to share about sustainable practices. In addition to this, Kapal Bambu also welcomes private events like yoga retreat or anything alike as long as the serenity is still intact and remains undisturbed.

2. Ecofriendly Rooms


We have 5 room types at Ecolodge that anyone can choose from. All placed in different areas with different sizes for different vibes, we have opted to name each room to Butterfly, Orangutan, Thomas Leaf Monkey, Siamang, and Hornbill room.

The similarity of all the rooms are three amenities that are lacking:

WiFi & TV

We simply decided not to install WiFi and TV inside the rooms for obvious reasons; we want our guests to immerse in nature and enjoy the simple life. We are an overly stimulated-generation and at Ecolodge, we want to help improve our senses through these simple steps. We believe that we are so in tuned with nature and moreover, our guests come from different parts of the world seeking to rejuvenate and see a bit of the jungle. Not having WiFi and TV inside the rooms is a great way to better reconnect with ourselves and be mindful of the surroundings.

If anyone wishes to connect to WiFi for work and other purposes, it is always available at the Kapal Bambu resto.


Although often considered essential for maintaining comfort in hot climates, reliance on air conditioners contributes significantly to energy consumption and greenhouse gas emissions, exacerbating climate change.

This is the reason why we use alternative cooling methods, such as natural ventilation, changing the AC with a fan, and shading techniques, which reduce our carbon footprint and promote sustainability. Fortunately, we are surrounded by trees and greenery making it comparatively cooler throughout the day. As we switch to fan instead of AC, we are fostering a healthier and more environmentally friendly way of living.

3. Waste Management

As an advocate for sustainability and conservation, practicing proper waste management is crucial at Ecolodge. All our rubbish are segregated in two groups: organic and non-organic.

Organic rubbish consists of materials that originate from living organisms or natural processes. These materials are biodegradable, meaning they can be broken down by microorganisms into simpler compounds over time.

Examples: Food waste (e.g., fruit and vegetable scraps, leftovers), garden waste (e.g., grass clippings, leaves)

Non-organic rubbish includes materials that are not derived from living organisms and are generally not biodegradable or degrade very slowly.

Examples: Plastics (e.g., bottles, bags, packaging), metals (e.g., aluminum cans, steel), glass, synthetic fabrics (e.g., nylon, polyester), and certain types of chemicals and hazardous waste.

All our organic rubbish goes straight to the ecofarm as food for the magots that are later fed to our free-range organic chicken that also produce organic eggs. Meanwhile, our non-organic rubbish are collected regularly by a truck initiative from the government.

Separating organic and non-organic rubbish is important for efficient recycling, composting, and disposal strategies to minimize environmental impact and maximize resource recovery.


At Ecolodge, we commit to giving importance in practicing sustainability as part of our responsibility for the environment and humanity. In addition to this, we conduct programs by inviting students and organizations to share what we do and teach them how to start sustainable practices in their fields.
