Cooking Competition in April 2024 Highlights

A lot has happened in the month of April of this year. One being the highlight event was the cooking competition held on Wednesday, April 24, 2024. This cooking contest was a collaboration between Ecolodge Bukit Lawang, PPLH Bohorok, and the Yayasan Ekosistem Lestari (YEL). It took place at the PPLH Bohorok Hall from 9 am to 12 pm and was participated in by 15 teams, each consisting of 3 members.

The theme of the competition was “Healthy Menus from Garden Produce.” Each team was required to cook 3 dishes. The first dish had to be made using ingredients from their own garden. The second dish had to be made using produce harvested from the PPLH garden. The third dish could be a home-cooked meal or a traditional dish, allowing participants to showcase their creativity. All participants received eco-friendly merchandise in the form of an ecoprint tumbler and apron. Cash prizes totaling 5 million Indonesian Rupiah were available for the winners.

The aim of this event was to promote environmental awareness and healthy eating. This was underscored by one of the competition rules, which prohibited the use of flavor enhancers such as monosodium glutamate (MSG). The hope was that by participating in this activity, the community could be encouraged to join the healthy family program. This program aims to support families in utilizing their front and backyard spaces for growing vegetables and herbs, and cooking traditional and healthy meals for their families.
